Accounting for specialty trade contractors

Concrete, framing, drywall, painting, flooring, masonry, steel and more. You work under GCs who pay slowly and hold retainage, so we keep your billings, lien paperwork and job costs tight.

What we watch for

Where the money is won or lost.

Concrete, framing, drywall, painting, flooring, masonry and steel: slow pay, lien rights, retainage.

01

Slow pay

Forecasting when cash lands

Pay-when-paid terms stretch your cash. We track every billing by GC and job, and forecast when the money will actually arrive.

02

Retainage

Retainage receivable

The retainage GCs hold can be a large share of what you are owed. We track it by job and release date so it gets billed and collected.

03

Liens

Lien rights and waivers

Notice and lien deadlines vary by state. We match lien waivers to payments, so you can see what you have waived and what you are still owed.

04

Productivity

Crew productivity

Labor hours against units installed, such as yards poured, sheets hung or squares laid, job by job.

05

Payroll

Certified and union payroll

Public jobs and union work bring extra payroll reporting. Payroll is coded by job and classification so the reports come from the books.

Monthly reporting

The numbers we report every month.

A short schedule, the same every month, so you can see the trend as well as the number.

Tax

Tax notes for 2026.

$2,000

1099-NEC threshold, 2026 payments

Subcontractor 1099s

For payments made in 2026, file a 1099-NEC for each unincorporated subcontractor paid $2,000 or more (it was $600). Forms for 2026 are due February 1, 2027, because January 31 falls on a Sunday.

Weekly

Certified payroll on federal jobs

Davis-Bacon certified payroll

Federally funded construction jobs need a certified payroll every week, signed with a statement of compliance. Form WH-347 is optional; the information is not. Some states add prevailing wage rules of their own.

$32M

Gross receipts test, 2026

Which contracts can skip percentage of completion

Contracts expected to finish within two years can use simpler methods than percentage of completion if your average annual gross receipts over the past three years are $32 million or less (2026). The method changes when profit is taxed, not whether it is.
